VE has a combination of both regular 'belayed' ropes, as well as auto-belay ropes.  The regular ropes simulate real life where you would need someone like Tom to hold the rope and ensure that you didn't fall.  An auto-belay device automatically adjusts the slack on the rope so you don't need a second person.
