The light from Calvin's candle would have reflected off of Alden's thumbnail, which would have given Calvin his target to aim at. Calvin would have swung back, and at the last moment Alden would have moved his thumb. And then hopefully Calvin's sledgehammer would hopefully hit the piledriver instead of Alden's face or chest.
