Unfortunately the chimney didn't have a working flue, so up until this point there was a stong, and very cold, wind blowing right down the chimney. We decided to start a fire if for no other reason than to block the cold air coming down.
The problem with the cold wind coming down was it was hard to get the smoke to go up it, (it was also hard to keep the matches lit with the wind coming down). We had a LOT of smoke inside the cabin before the chimney warmed up enough to have the smoke go up.
