Things sped up a bit when after 11pm the mechanic's brother, who was a mechanic at a truck stop on the other side of the highway, arrived to help out. The first mechanic also got off work at 11pm so he was able to work on it full time.
The problem was that they were able to replace the broken brake lines, but they didn't have the right tools to "bleed" the air out of them. That meant that until it happened the Tedmobile only had around 10-20% braking power.
This work continued till around 1:30am, when the two mechanics were getting so tired Ted was afraid they'd make a mistake. He then gave them $250 for their hard work. The mechanics initially tried to refuse the money, (and even pointed out that one semi driver had given them $100 for helping the Scouts), but Ted insisted. They had more than earned it, even if the brakes didn't work perfectly.
