They also had a fancy winch system set up to move them around. You never had to pick one up. You would just loop a rope around it, then the turning of the turret would pull the rope towards the brackets that were used to feed ammo to the guns.

Imagine doing that in a heavy sea, with large rolling waves pitching the battleship up and down, and you trying to move giant explosive shells around with that little rope.
